Pillar Five – Real World Application

The Five Pillars of Instruction

Real World Application – One of the Five Pillars of Instruction

Applying learning to real-world situations is a vital part of the educational process, and it helps answer the age-old question many students ask: “Why do I have to learn this? I’ll never use it.” At School House Canada, we are committed to making every skill meaningful and relevant so students see the value in what they are learning. To support this, we provide gateway assignments that encourage students to think deeply, make connections, and apply their knowledge in practical ways. These tasks require higher-level thinking skills and show students how concepts appear in daily life—whether in problem-solving, decision-making, or understanding the world around them. By bridging classroom learning with real-world experiences, students not only strengthen their understanding but also gain confidence in using their skills beyond the lesson.

Gateway Assignments

Applying what is learned in the classroom to the real world is an important step for students and should be fostered whenever possible.

Get in touch with us now to explore how we can help your child discover his or her learning prowess.

At the end of most modules, students must complete “gateway assignments”. These assignments encourage the students to demonstrate their learning successes in a meaningful way. The gateway assignments allow students to show their understanding by producing a work of their choice that relates to the real world of the student—an essay, a lab report, a presentation, a portfolio, a drawing, a model, a song, or some other demonstration of competency.
