School House Canada believes that students should take summative tests only when they are confident that they will be successful. Success breeds success. Of course, this requires a different approach to teaching than the one-size-fits-all style of instruction found in most schools today.

The Road to Success
After instruction, feedback, and remediation mandated by the pre-test and the practice exercises, post-tests or summative evaluations are given. When the post-test results are compared to the pre-test results, the differences are measurable. The post-test confirms that the students have understood and mastered the objectives set out for them in the beginning. At this point, a student will need to do periodic practice to maintain the skills that have been acquired.

Success breeds success. It is counterproductive to test a student when he has not mastered the content. We already know what the results will be.
