Objective Based Instruction

Objective based instruction is an instructional approach where lessons are designed and delivered with clear, specific learning objectives in mind. The goal is to focus teaching on measurable outcomes, ensuring that students understand what they need to learn and why it’s important. These objectives are often clearly stated at the beginning of the lesson and guide the teaching and assessment processes.

What Are Learning Objectives?

  • Learning objectives are specific, measurable, observable student behaviors;
  • An objective is a description of a performance you want learners to be able to exhibit before you consider them competent; and
  • Learning objectives can describe these behaviors at a course, module/unit, or session level.
Why have objectives?
  • To convey instructional intent to students;
  • To ensure that learning is focused clearly enough that students, parents and teachers know what is going on;
  • To provide direction to instruction; and
  • To provide guidelines for alignment of assessment.

Key Components of Objective Instruction

  • Clear Learning Objectives: Teachers define specific goals for what students should be able to do by the end of the lesson or unit. These objectives are often measurable and can include skills, knowledge, or competencies the student should demonstrate.
  • Student-Centered: Objective based instruction often involves a more active, engaged learning process where students are aware of the outcomes they are working toward, helping to guide their learning process.
  • Focus on Assessment: Since objectives are measurable, assessments are aligned with these goals. The aim is to check if students can meet the specified learning targets.
  • Instructional Strategies: Teachers tailor their teaching methods (e.g., direct instruction, cooperative learning, etc.) to help students meet the objectives. This can include a mix of activities, lessons, and formative assessments to ensure that the objectives are being met.
  • Continuous Feedback: Teachers provide ongoing feedback to students to ensure they are on track to meet the objectives and make necessary adjustments to instruction as needed.
