What is private tutoring?
Private tutoring is the best option for anyone looking for individual, personalized help with their academic performance, especially for subjects like English, math and science.
School House Canada tutors provide our students with structured lessons to teach curriculum content while also being flexible enough to answer questions as they come up, help look over assignments and assist in exam preparation.
Our tutors can help students who need to catch up because they have fallen behind as well as those students who need a greater challenge than they are receiving in the traditional classroom.
How do I know if my child needs a tutor?
All students learn differently and at different rates. If a student struggles occasionally with some concepts, this does not necessarily indicate that problems lie ahead. It’s normal for students to struggle at times, and this struggle is an integral part of the learning process. However, if the struggle begins to manifest itself in negative ways, it may be time to seek a tutor. Here are some signs that indicate a child may need a tutor.
* Your child seems to have lost that “spark” for learning.
* Your child struggles excessively to focus on reading or homework.
* Your child gets consistently poor test scores.
* Your child develops low self-esteem.
So, if your child displays any of these telltale signs, you are doing the right thing to seek help and give your child a better chance at success. The tutors at School House Canada excel in creating a positive learning environment that focuses on developing a student’s self-confidence and building a positive and creative attitude towards learning.
When should I enroll my child in tutoring classes?
If your child needs assistance, you should enroll him or her as soon as possible. Leaving assistance to the end causes undue stress for parents and students. Trying to cram everything in near the end of the term or just before exams is never a good idea and is a short-term solution. Cramming does not lead to lasting learning or understanding and, most often, necessitates additional interventions in the future.
How often does my child need to attend tutoring sessions?
If your child needs intensive tutoring to get back on track, we recommend two or three tutoring sessions per week to see real progress. That consistency makes a difference, which is why we guarantee progress!
Are your tutors qualified teachers?
You bet. School House Canada specifically hand picks and recruits the best tutors and vets them with a thorough interview and application process. We then take them through an intensive training program so that they become fully aware of the School House teaching method and know how to best teach and support your child.
How does School House Canada develop a program plan for my child?
During the initial consultation with the Director of Instruction, you will be asked about your child’s educational history, learning patterns, likes and dislikes. Further, the Director may request samples of tests, report cards and other summative evaluations. From all the information collected, the Director of Instruction and the tutor will establish a base for instruction and build out from it to ensure that all the skills, concepts and objectives of the unit or module of study are thoroughly covered and understood.
The program plan is modified and developed further, if required, after the first few sessions with the student’s tutor.
What happens during the initial sessions?
During the initial sessions, our tutors will focus on getting to know their students, finding out what their strengths and weaknesses are and then building or modifying the plan to get the most out of the tutoring sessions.
For future sessions, our tutors spend the first part of the lesson working through any questions the student has, then go through curriculum content together, and finally summarise and make plans for the next lesson
Students will be asked to send questions and problematic assignments to the tutor before their session so that he or she can prepare the most effective tutoring session and use their time together in the most constructive manner.
Are the lessons completely personalized to the student?
Every lesson is unique, and the sole focus of the tutor is to help a student overcome immediate areas of concern.
Because our lessons are completely personalised, what happens during lessons is partially guided by the student. The tutor will add instruction and support to ensure that the necessary skills, concepts and objectives for each module are fully covered and understood.
What happens during the initial sessions?
Absolutely! You can order online through our website or by calling us. We offer both takeout and delivery within a specific radius.
How long are tutoring sessions?
Lessons can be as long as you’d like them to be. For most of our students, a one-hour session works well. However, for some older students, a 1.5-hour or a 2-hour session may work best.
What is the maintenance program?
If your child is doing well, but you want to ensure they stay on track and get extra practice time or homework help, our Maintenance Program is a great way to get proactive support once or twice a week.
Do School House Canada tutors work with my child’s teacher or school?
Collaborating with your child’s classroom teacher can play an important part in the success of your child’s learning program. With your permission, our tutors can communicate with your child’s teacher and partner with them to ensure that the progress you see in our tutoring program is reflected in the classroom.
Does the student need to bring anything to the tutoring sessions?
For each tutoring session, a student will be required to bring a binder specifically for the School House Canada classes along with an adequate supply of paper, pencils and pens. All notes, assignments and formative tests will be kept in the School House CanadaTutor binder.
What are the Parent Guides used for?
Our Parent Guides are for parents who want to take a more active role in their child’s educational plan. A parent can purchase a unit that covers an important topic in the mathematics or language arts program of studies. Using our Five Pillars of Instruction presentation method, parents and students can work through the objectives of the topic in a logical one-step-at-a-time process. The guide contains examples that the student can model, in-depth explanations, worksheets, formative and summative evaluations and a suitable application to summarize the student’s learning. If the parents wish, they can supplement the program by having their child meet occasionally with a tutor to provide pertinent comments or direction.
How can I contact my tutor?
Initially, your tutor will get in touch with you directly by giving you a phone call or sending you a text message to arrange the tutoring dates and times. We recommend you save their mobile number as a contact in your phone so you can get in touch with them easily in the future!
I want a different tutor. Can I ask for someone else?
Yes, of course, you can. School House Canada prides itself on matching students with the best tutor for them. We rarely have people ask for a different tutor. However, if you do need someone else, for whatever reason, please call us at 780-851-6087
What do I do if I need to cancel a lesson?
We know life gets busy, so we can be flexible around your schedule, too. All you need to do is get in touch with your tutor directly and reschedule the lesson for another time.
However, please keep in mind that we have a cancellation policy – if you cancel a lesson less than 3 hour before the time you arranged with your tutor, you’ll get charged 100% of the lesson fee. This is to ensure our tutors’ time is respected. So, please, if you need to cancel or move a lesson, do it well in advance!
